Found Reception with Randy Harrison, and the Found Workshop

So, to start things off, Milo went to the Found reception with two older ladies who he had met at the last performances of Silence, and the one lady’s son (who was only along for the workshop, poor boy doesn’t know what he’s missing.) We arrived a bit early, and after The Only One Who Wasn’t There For Randy Harrison had a run in with him in the men’s room(lucky duck)((not a QaF run in to clarify, just a ‘holy shit Randy Harrison and well now I’m not going to be able to pee’ type run in)), the reception got under way. The ‘Broadway in the Berkshires’ part of the reception started off with a great number by one Maureen M. Stanton (you may know her as ‘The Countess’), followed by another by Natalie Joy Johnson which I’m going to beat myself fof not remembering. Nonetheless it was a great upbeat number, and she sang it spot on.

And then came Randolph. I can’t really describe the difference, the reception’s reaction. He sang ‘Hope there’s Someone’ by Antony and the Johnsons, sang it beautifully, and I think it’s one of my favorite performances by him, ever. (Yes, rivaling even Shake Me Down.) Video clips to follow once I have reliable internet. Maybe it was only because this was the first time I had heard him really sing live(if you don’t count Dr. Chilton - this was simply on another level.) After he finished there was a beat of silence for all the hearts that had died, and then Hunter took the stage back following a few hearty rounds of well earned applause and bashful Randy.

Edit: Ok I was just relistening to it and. His voice was MADE for the song, and it’s just - too perfect. It gave me chills again even listening to it on the crappy audio my camera managed to pick up.

Following Randy’s amazing performance was an original song by Shaina Taub, who played ‘Denise’ in Found, about ‘Being a Political Wife.’ The song was hilarious, her delivery was flawless, and I believe Hunter said something about it being available for download somewhere which, if it was true, Milo needs to get on that shit, because it’s was honestly hilarious(and hey, it poked fun at everyone from Hilary Clinton to Anne Romney, so you really can’t go wrong.)

Next up was I THINK I THINK Eli Bolin - I’m not sure that’s who it was, but he had an original number for a musical he was writing about a nerd who falls in love with a volleyball player. An interesting concept, and cute song for sure.

Last but not least was another number by Natalie, preempted by a rather hilarious little schpeel and into the song called ‘Moondance’ by Van Morrison. ( I believe that was the song she sang - if anyone can correct me please go ahead :) )

After all the performances were complete we all mingled a bit more before the reception, and a few of the people we had met up with did get a chance to talk to Randy, who was(much to all our relief) looking much more pleasant and happy and not like he wanted to murder us all with a blunt rusty spoon and/or run away as fast as was humanly possible. Topics ranged from a possible new QWAN production(!!!) to Silence, and Randy was gifted with two copies of the photo taken that I posted from Silence of him and Jenn, one copy for him, and one for Jenn, which he really seemed to like. (Randy smilesssss.) And did I mention he was actually willing to talk to people.

Once we all filed into the theatre, Milo was given another mini heart attack when we discovered that Randy and the Countess were seated just a row in front of us, and Milo was given the difficult decision of Randy watching or actually paying attention to the play.

Speaking of.

Found, the workshop being presented, is about notes and letters, shopping lists, to-do-lists, and other scraps of paper found everywhere from car windshields to thrift stores to the dumpster behind that elementary school. It started off slowly, but was definitely an interesting concept. By about halfway through the first act, my attention was even drawn away from Randolph to the singing and dancing hilarity on stage that sometimes even managed to strike at poignancy through the humor.

After intermission, the real fun began. Where the first half of the show may have been a bit slow, in the second half the actors really amped it up, and particularly in a scene I like to call ‘What the fuck happened in January at the play Jonny Tremain?!?!’, the main actor traversed into the audience and proceeded to have the whole place in stitches while the actors on stage played off him.

And somewhere in this there was a true Randy laugh, loud and clear above the rest of the audience and angels started singing or something I’m pretty sure this actually happened with like cherubs with harps and the whole nine yards..

It was one scene that even Randy really seemed to enjoy, and got the audience involved for the rest of the play, which continued on that vibe. Where the first half of the play sometimes managed to strike a feels chord, along with crude and hilarious humor, the second half focused more on that poignant aspect with I must say fairly successful results. There were two parts I especially liked, and one line ‘It’s time to stop being polite, and start being totally Rad’ that were perfectly pitched. Such great things as ‘Steve’, Patrick(all hail Hrothgar!) and ‘This is it for us, I think it has been for a while’, were some personal favorite moments.

Oh, and Keith B., creator of Bodyhunters.

All in all, I would DEFINITELY recommend anyone to go see this who has the chance - with a bit more polish I really think this could be a super fantastic play, and I am so glad I got to see it in its infancy. It does still need some polish - but that’s what a workshop is for.

Afterwards thankfully, Randy mingled some more with the crowd(and still wasn’t looking like he wanted to run away!), although I don’t believe any of our group talked to him again, one of the ladies did manage to grab an autographed program for me. Which rocked hardcore.

Edit: Got this email from one of the ladies I went with about her after-show chat with Randy:

I’m so glad I insisted on getting you that autograph. It gave me the chance to speak to him all alone. I was teasing him about how well he covers his New England accent. He insisted that he didn’t have one. Then he started talking to me with it and laughed. Then said, no really I don’t have one. I laughed and said I didn’t believe him. He gave me a big smile and then I thanked him for the autograph and walked away. So cute.

Let me die.

Oh and this is a horribly fanboying moment, but Milo and Randy got squished together in the crowd coming out of the theatre and it was NOT A STALKER MOMENT I PROMISE IT WAS AN ACCIDENT but it still made my night. (Our group had stopped in a corner where a group of Randy’s friends also came to talk IT WASN’T MY FAULT.)

A super fantastico night, and one I’m glad I spent the money on, if only to see Randy NOT being uncomfortable.

Pics, videos from the reception, and other stuff to follow when I am not dying. <3
